Having been in Avignon now for a few months, I can say with hand on heart that it is a wonderful city to visit, and call home. Set on the south bank of the Rhone. Avignon is a city full of history, culture, romance and beauty.

If you choose to come and visit this quaint little city, I recommend you try it the “old school” way. Turn off your google maps, put down the travel guide, and get lost in its beauty. You can’t go too far wrong here. With the city wall surrounding the entire centre, and a wonderful invention called “signposts” you can spend all day exploring. Without worrying about where you are, or the way back to your hotel or apartment.
Finding your way around
All the major attractions are well signposted around Avignon. There is also every type of restaurant, cafe and bar you could ask for. No problem to keep you fuelled up as you wander around for hours on end. Soaking up the sun and taking in the beautiful sights and sounds as you go.

Restaurants and cafes
Feel the urge to check Tripadvisor on your phone to see if that restaurant has good reviews? No need. Ask yourself is it busy around lunchtime? Is it inhabited by locals and tourists alike? Does the smell of the food make your mouth water? Then guess what! It’s worth a try. I am yet to find any restaurants here myself that I would not return to using these methods. A few local recommendations are always handy as well 😉 . The French are very proud of their gastronomic history. As a general rule in my experience, they don’t do “bad food”. It’s not in their nature. The competition here is too fierce that word would soon get around and nobody would dine there.

Open your eyes
There are so many things to see that are plain and simply not on the map to find. One of my favourites is the painted windows. You will see them dotted around the city on different buildings. As well as the beautiful little gardens around the back of the tourist information centre. Pretty little cafes, bars and restaurants are just a further 2 minutes walk around the corner in “Place de Corps Saints”.

It really is worth a try. Be a little bit different, go against the flow and “wing it” for a day or even just a few hours, I promise you won’t regret it. There is beauty all around us. We all spend so much time glued to our smartphones these days, that we pass it by without even a second glance. So go ahead, switch it off! I dare you to see what happens. And you never know, you might even enjoy yourself for a little while.

Thank you Phil for all of your wonderful recommendations. In a few days I will be visiting Avignon and the surrounding area (Arles, Uzès). Just a short roadtrip from Bavaria. Having found your website with all the nice stories and photographs has wet my appetite!
